KIMS Doctors Restore Straight Posture of Man Whose Neck Had Been Bent Since Childhood
Bhubaneswar (Odia Gossip Bureau, April 22): KIMS Bhubaneswar has become one of the few tertiary healthcare centres in the country to have successfully treated and restored, through a complex surgery, an almost permanently bent neck of a patient suffering from Ankylosing Spondylitis.
Sujit Nayak, a 45-year-old resident of the Trisulia area in Cuttack district, had been suffering from ankylosing spondylitis since his childhood. Patients with this condition experience progressive bending of the spine, which can eventually lead to complete fusion of the spinal cord.
In Sujit’s case, an accident further worsened his condition, causing a severe fracture and additional bending of his already weakened spine. As a result, his head remained constantly bent downward - he was unable to look up, and even eating and sleeping properly had become extremely difficult.
Due to financial constraints, he could not seek treatment outside the state. Later, on the advice of friends, he was admitted to KIMS Hospital. Under the leadership of senior spine surgeon Dr. Jitendra Kumar Rout, a team of specialist doctors took up the case as a challenge. Despite the high risks involved, the team successfully carried out the complex surgery, which lasted for 8 hours.
“We took the case as a challenge. The patient is now able to walk straight and lead a normal life. He has got a new life,” Dr Rout said.
After the surgery, Sujit Nayak is now completely healthy. He can sit upright, lift his head and look around, and eat properly. Although it was an extremely complex and risky spine surgery, success was achieved through teamwork and advanced medical technology.
Dr Rout credited the success to the advanced infrastructure available in KIMS and the focus of its founder, Dr Achyuta Samanta, to providing advanced care to patients to lead a fulfilling life..png)
